Felling edge trees at Torr Duhan
Photograph is courtesy of John Ireland, who is currently based at Lochaber Forest District.
This view and those in the attached PDF show a clearfell site at Torr Duhan in Fort Augusutus Forest District where the large Silver fir or Noble fir edge trees next to a fence and field boundary are being felled with the assistance of a hand Tifor winch. The aim was to pull the trees in towards the felling site and leave the fence and field undamaged.
Observant readers will note that the Tirfor hand winch has been set up to pull the tree towards the winch operator but close examination reveals that it was set up to swing the tree inwards just enough to fell it parallel to the fence and not directly towards the winch position. No doubt all the risks were fully appreciated and escape routes planned but perhaps not how it would be done today!
Apparently the man on the winch was Forester James Dewar and the feller Jock Jamieson.
The attached PDF shows a bit more of the site.
