One of the field seminars to update front line staff on latest thinking on felled site cultivation systems and planting methods.

Up until this point the main tools available for cultivation was either the very large and heavy D7 tractor and mounted restock plough or a wheeled tractor with scarifier discs fitted on the back. These were suitable for drier pine typical sites but wetter spruce sites had to be planted without any cultivation until the advent of the mounding excavator which came to the forefront in the late 1970s. During the 1980s the systems of mounding was developed and further refined as excavators were further developed and tooled up and work studied.

I think No.2 is Mike Green, recently retired. He was assistant DO at Buchan District at the time. Comment left on 23 September 2018 at 16:27 by Ronald MARNIE

Aye Frank, having had a wee look, do you no think that No.6 is Dave Tracy, Research Forester at Cairnbaan Silv(N) Research Outstation? AMENDED 27/09/2018

Please accept my apologies Frank, I misread in my haste No.5 and No.6, I do not know whether No.6 is Sandy Calder or David Paterson. However, I suspect from the stature of the man, the hat and the thinning crown it more likely to be David Paterson, Forest Research - Edinburgh.

I have contacted No.5 Dave Tracy, Research Forester at Cairnbaan Silv(N) Research Outstation, Argyll. He confirms that he is No.5 in the image. Comment left on 27 September 2018 at 09:37 by Bill Rayner
No.2 is Mike Green. He joined the FC's district office in Perth as a new district officer in the late 1970s. I was an area land agent based in that office at the time. Comment left on 17 October 2018 at 12:23 by Charles Dickens
