Finnish Foresters visit Forestry sites
Photograph is courtesy of John Ireland, who is currently based at Lochaber Forest District.
John recalls that this was a group of Finnish foresters visiting Scotland to observe techniques used in new planting and restocking of forests in the Highlands. This is a new planting site (not identified) in Fort Augustus Forest District which has been ploughed with a double furrow tine plough and planted with Sitka spruce.
The writer recalls such a group at this time visiting ploughing on deep peat at ‘The Lochans’ site on the Rosehall to Lairg road. One question they asked was ‘What happens to the peat when it oxidises?’ Our thoughts then - it grew better trees - not even remotely thinking about loss of carbon storage capacity!
At this site a number of Forest Research staff are present as well as those from the Fort Augustus Forest District. Some of those numbered are from the visiting group.
