Felled Douglas fir on the lower ground at Dalcataig and some evidence of the steeper slopes to come. Can you spot Head forester, Jim Pratt, on the left and Forester, Jim Lyon, on the right.
Jim Pratt tells of a special order of high quality very long length logs from this area. The very best logs from the forest eventually made their way to the saw mill at Mosstodlach and there precisely cut into beautiful straight square baulks of timber. These were shipped to Portsmouth and built into large rafts of precise dimension to be towed out into the North Sea for gunnery target practice!
Jim asked Willie MacPherson (Kilmallie Mills timber buyer) never to tell him again the fate of all his beautiful logs from the forest.
