Culloden Forest Fire Map 1979

This small scale map covers all the forest areas in Culloden Forest in 1979 and shows the main areas of fire concern at that time. It is difficult to determine now whether the green yellow colour wash highlighting many of the forest areas is supposed to be yellow as signifying forests with high hazard ratings and liable to burn very easily in dry conditions – young plantations of pine etc. The red areas and bands are very much focussed towards the recreation areas, forests next to towns and also hill areas subject to muir burning. There is symbols signifying many fire belts and fire breaks (usually larch trees planted in strips and the latter as ploughed or cultivated bare soil strips).
Over the map area there are a number of water supply types, rivers, burns, lochs and also static 1000 litre tanks located in strategic areas near Culloden.
