KSK 16 Steyr Cable crane in Glenrigh Forest
Photographs courtesy of Walter Strzygowski who was the technical field engineer who worked for Steyr and his role was to set up, operate and prove to Riddochs of Rothiemay that the KSK system suited the conditions on the west of Scotland.
He succeeded as Riddochs of Rothiemay purchased the cable crane and in winter 1980/81 the machine is in Glenrigh Forest and Walter was back to train Riddoch employees as Steyr Cable Crane operators.
Note the distant view of Ben Nevis from the south. Walter was glad to of the hard frost to hold the anchor trees or stumps for the six guy lines at the winch end but more critically at the top spar tree. He found that in Scotland the trees at the top of the hill or slope were generally quite small, in wet ground and often did not hold that well as anchors. He also enjoyed the midge free conditions in winter.
