Former Kirkhill Forest Workers

Date Added: 20 June 2016 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 2010 Picture No: 3357

The photograph is courtesy of Bill Sinclair, Turriff who goes on to say:

‘The attached photo of Harry Fogiel and me was taken when we met on 21st June 2010. Incidentally the last time we met was 52 years ago! He was lorry driver at Kirkhill in the 50s but left to work in Stoneywood paper mill. (sometime in the 60s I think, but I`m not very sure) He now lives in Bucksburn and must be in his late 80s.

I worked at Kirkhill from 1953 to 1958 and was plant boy at Balbithan! I recall a photo being taken in the nursery at East Woodlands by the P&J of a large lorry containing something like 40,000 Christmas trees bound for London. I was there helping to load and the driver had difficulty getting them all on. He kept tightening the ropes and squeezing the load! Wonder what state they arrived!! There was a photo in the papers probably Christmas 54 or 55.’

Any more memories of Kirkhill Forest workers would be very welcome. Bill also gave me copies of photos of Kirkhill workers taken in 1956 going about their work but the images are very small and do not fit well on the website. The workers included Bill Bisset, Jim Murray, Dan MacEwen, Hector Macdonald, Jim Forbes, Peter White and Alex Mitchell.
