Professional photograph of Forest District Manager David Henderson Howat at the Forest District wall map which was a feature in most districts at the time. Districts were of a modest size then and the one inch scale fitted well on most walls! This was the early period of the new Forest District structures (formed around 1983) that evolved from the previous Forest Units and old Districts.
The various coloured areas on the map represent forest areas, green being Forestry Commission and blue, private Forestry Companies or Estates. The red colour could represent areas designated for conservation known as SSSIs (Special Sites of Conservation Interest).
The year 1985 has been estimated.
