Culbin Forest -Corsican Pine planted 1912
Photograph courtesy of David Foot, Surrey.
Most likely Corsican pine planted around Binsness House by the Chadwick family in Culbin to prevent the moving sand dunes engulfing the house and property.
The excavation shows the extent of the inundation by the sand in and around the surviving trees. The planting was only partially successful as the outer northern and western edges of the plantings were lost and it was only in later years after World War 2, once the Forestry Commission stabilised the dune system over the whole area, that the inundation process completely stopped.
