Tihill Work Instruction Sheet

‘My father has come across this in a pile of his old papers and I thought it might be of interest for the site.
It is a work instruction for a weeding job my father was employed to do for Tilhill who managed the part of Tulliallan forest that lay between the Police College and the FC’s Devilla forest.
Dated 01/09/1970 it was for weeding a restock which appears to have been partly fire damaged and replanted. The area was 10.0 acres and the rate £7 per acre. The signature is that of William (Bill) Morgan who was the forester at the time.’

Amazing! I did the same kind of work in exactly the same place about 1965. The old forest had been clear-felled and my brother and I had to hack out the rhododendrons. My brother Donald worked for a while with Tillhill but we lived at Westfield, The Forestry Commission houses, so we just jumped our garden fence, across the field and over the stone dyke of Tulliallan Wood. The "roddies" were a pig to cut with a cleaver, all twisted and intertwined. I think we just did Saturdays because I worked with the Commission at Devilla at the time. Lots of memories.

Not a bad rate at all, I was paid thirty Bob an acre for weeding at Cumbernauld and Fauldhouse plantations in 1959/60 .
