A series of photographs taken of a well turned out display in a hall possibly near Glenmore Forest Park (Queen’s Forest) celebrating the first 50 years of the Forestry Commission.

The sections of the display highlight the various work operations within the Forestry Commission including thinning, harvesting systems and timber markets. This display must have taken many hours to construct as it seems to have used carefully trimmed young Sitka spruce trees from the tree nursery transplant lines as the model forest. The model machinery, some especially made, would have been a young and perhaps not so young person’s delight.

The thinning panel is difficult to make out and would have been interesting to see how they portrayed and involved the public in this exercise. The systems section covers horse extraction, transport of poles by lorry with hydraulic crane, tractor skidding, pole extraction by tractor with hydraulic crane and pole wagon, thinning and clearfell cable crane set ups and other lorry transport.

Markets have a large image of the Fort William pulp mill and the interior of a sawmill with bandsaw plus models of wood artefacts such as gates, poles, sheds and paper.

Does anyone remember this event and its location?
