50th Anniversary of Forestry Commission

A series of photographs taken of a well turned out display in a hall possibly near Glenmore Forest Park (Queen’s Forest) celebrating the first 50 years of the Forestry Commission.
The sections of the display highlight the various work operations within the Forestry Commission including training and use of felling aids. The training is focussed only on manual harvesting with chainsaw and features some fairly lightweight safety and wet weather gear. No kevlar or bulky pads then. This display appears to promote 100% use of the chainsaw for harvesting the tree as there is no sign of an axe anywhere although at this time many squads worked in pair with one chain saw and a couple of axes. The training and felling aid feature laying in with chainsaw, use of breaking bar and alloy wedge, taking down tree with pole handles cant hook, chainsaw snedding and sharpening of saw chain on a vice.
The display items include a loggers belt complete with marker pen, tools, wedge pocket, combination plug spanner, loggers tape and pulp hook. On the tree stump demonstrating felling cuts there is a braking bar and alloy wedge, pole handled cant hook, saw chain filing vice, and a Jonsered 621 chainsaw. On the floor and attached to a sling around the tree stump is a tirfor hand winch for pulling down felled trees which are totally stuck up in the crowns of other trees.
