50th Anniversary of Forestry Commission
The photograph is courtesy of Inverness, Ross and Skye Forest District and staff at their Fort Augustus office.
A series of photographs taken of a well turned out display in a hall possibly near Glenmore Forest Park (Queen’s Forest) celebrating the first 50 years of the Forestry Commission.
The sections of the display highlight the various work operations within the Forestry Commission including fertilising, fire protection, and roads. In the fertilising panel the emphasis is on the fertilising of established tree crops and adding fertiliser to counteract deficiencies in the foliage and to boost growth on poorer nutrient sites. Below the examples of foliage and tree ring growth samples are a couple of specimen bags of fertiliser.
The fire prevention panel has details of actions on prevention, detection and suppression of fire outbreaks with examples of climate measuring devices to assist in assessing the fire risks on any day, images of fire towers for watchers to alert staff of any tale-tale smoke, vehicles equipped with fire fighting equipment and Storno pocket radios which were just being introduced at this time. Below the panel is a Hathaway fire pump, a fire hose, birch and netting fire brooms, fire warning sign and a plastic hand pressure pump to spray water on small fires.
The next panel on roads and bridges is more difficult to decipher but shows a 19 RB type front shovel digger beside a pile of road making material and two large new concrete bridges – one constructed in Glen Affric and the other in Glen Garry.
Does anyone remember this event and its location?
