50th Anniversary of Forestry Commission

A series of photographs taken of a well turned out display in a hall possibly near Glenmore Forest Park (Queen’s Forest) celebrating the first 50 years of the Forestry Commission.
The sections of the display highlight the various work operations within the Forestry Commission including fencing, ploughing, planting and weeding. The first on fencing has two coils of fencing wire (possibly 8 guage) propped up below the stand while the display give pictorial examples of deer, rabbit and hare and lastly sheep fences with some profiles of the fence composition at the bottom.
The second panel covers the reasons for preparation of the ground for planting of trees by ploughing and draining with special ploughs. Some pictorial examples of the old hand work against modern machinery are included. The ambitious part of the display are the three types of soil profiles (iron pan, gley and also peat) which have been cut in their entirety and set up in vertical open sided boxes for everyone to view.
The planting operation panel is partially obscure but perhaps a bit optimistically has hand planting versus machine planting, the mechanical part still a problem almost fifty years later! Fertiliser application by hand and by machine photographs where the machine part has since been taken over by helicopter. Below the stand are two trees in separate pots one very large tree and one small covered by the words ‘with phosphate fertiliser and without phosphate’. No mistaking the message there!
The final section covers weed control with the old hand methods versus up and coming herbicides and laid out on the floor below are various machines including brush cutter, sprayers (Policlair)and guarded sprayers.
