Roughed out bobbin from Contin Mill
This image submitted by Alasdair Cameron is of what he believes the last remaining Bobbin from Rose’s Contin Bobbin Mill.
It appears that this one was being roughed out and rejected due to a flaw in the wood (not seen as on other side). Other views of the bobbin are in the PDF and one of the images shows markings on the inside side flange of the bobbin which are not easily explained. It is assumed the bobbin core axle would have been cut by a single broad blade and there may have been some ‘blade chatter’ but the very regular and rather attractive partial spiral groves running to the centre are difficult to explain.
Perhaps regular wood turners or others may be able to say how these marks occurred?
The final image in the PDF shows where the turning lathe dogs were fixed into the end of the bobbin but interestingly also shows the original cross cut saw blade marks which are very rough and irregular indeed and one must question the maintenance and set of the blade.
