Athnamulloch New Native Pinewood, Glen Affric

Richard Davies (District officer Fort Augustus Forest District) is addressing FC personnel, RSFS members, Inverness College members and Magnus Magnusson in Glen Affric on a very beautiful May day.
The occasion was the first tree planted for the Forestry Commission on the Athnamullach New Native Pinewood on the national forest estate in Glen Affric by Magnus Magnusson KBE, Chairman of the Nature Conservancy Council Committee for Scotland.
The stainless steel border spade used for the ceremony was inscribed and currently (2016) hangs on the wall of the FC office at Fort Augustus.
Magnus was Chairman of NCCS, as Scottish Natural Heritage was not yet in being.
This occasion was related to the start up of the New Native Pinewood Grant Scheme for the private sector. FCS then followed the new grant with a review of pinewoods on the national forest estate by Alan Stevenson, Charlie Taylor and Graham Tuley. This re-assessment triggered a major programme of pinewood restoration on the national forest estate labelled the ‘Native Pinewood Initiative’ (1993) and semi-natural native woodland restoration being embedded into core forest practise everywhere from then on.
