Norman Davidson and John Povall from the Benmore Forester Training School setting up young seedling trees into the lining out boards. The seedlings are spaced evenly along the board out via cut notches with their roots just below the edge of the board. When fully filled, the top board with the soft rubberised strip is hinged over and clamped by sliding rings over the closed hinges. This was a job ideally suited to nimble fingers of women who could fill boards very quickly indeed. The filled boards were then taken and set up on the edge of a straight cut trench, as many boards used to complete the whole line. The whole trench was then filled in and packed with soil, boards unclamped and carefully lifted off, leaving a neat straight row of evenly spaced young trees with pleanty of space to grow for their final 18 months or two years in the nursery See other photographs.
