Steyr Cable Crane in action

Steyr Cable Crane in action

Date Added: 30 December 2015 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1980 Picture No: 3164

Photograph is courtesy of Inverness, Ross and Skye Forest District and staff at their Fort Augustus office.

Unfortunately no information on these photographs of the Steyr in action (two images). This first image gives a good view of the roadside base with machines placed on either side of the cable crane to handle the unsned Sitka spruce trees.

On the far side is a Logma stroke processor designed to remove the branches and cut the tree stem into logs and other products. The Hymac with a grapple crane head moved the logs from the processor to the log piles.

The trees look very rough and it must have been difficult to work when the branches and logs piles up high. Can anyone describe the operation in more detail and how it progressed? Also name the location and operators? See large photograph.

The Steyr was originally with Riddochs and later with Boyd Brothers of Blaich, near Fort William.

In Boyd's ownership the Logma boom was mounted on a Massey Ferguson/Hymac excavator base (from the era when both those manufacturers were owned by IBH), possibly a 450, painted red, and sign written as the 'Blaich Processor'.
