South Laggan Forest Planting 1920-1923

A set of four photographs which have survived and depict the first tree planting areas in the Forest. The images show the relatively slow growth progress of the trees which in most instances would have been directly planted into the ground without any cultivation or fertiliser.
There is mention of use of turfs for planting the replacement trees (Beating Up – BU) especially in the wetter areas and possibly also on heather areas.
Some of the photographs show the railway line at the bottom of the slope and a brief note on one to say that they limited the hand drains to minimise any risk of landslides onto the line. One of the photographs shows a series of very eroded channels on the steep slopes leading down to the railway indicating that some landslips and debris must have been coming down prior to afforestation.
This image shows the severely eroded water channels leading straight down the hill. Can anyone place the long well build wall in the foreground?
