Loch Arkaig from Clunes
Photograph is courtesy of Inverness, Ross and Skye Forest District and staff at their Fort Augustus office.
Photograph has no details other than name of location. Some people may be able to locate the view point and name the hillsides seen in the image.
The year 1910 is purely a guess (it could be much earlier) but is guided by the knowledge of the author who remembers part of the hillside on the left of the loch being ploughed in the early 1970s and that there were old trunks of trees lying in the peat which caused no end of problems to the plough men. The plough socks went under the trunks and brought the whole outfit to a stop and being soft and peaty the tractor was unable to reverse as it just pulled a skin of vegetation off the surface and sank deeper into the mire.
It could be assumed the trees in the photograph were felled at some point and the area left unplanted for quite some time.
