‘The Holt Caterpillar of 1921 dates from the time that the Caterpillar tractor company was formed by amalgamation of the Holt and Best tractor companies.

The tractor in my photo was a 5 ton Holt. This machine had worked from new on an estate in the north of Scotland and one Andrew Allan, a forestry and estate contractor from Callander found it quite complete but derelict in an estate outhouse.

Andrew ran a lot of Caterpillars in his forestry ploughing and road making operation and had good connections with the then Caterpillar dealer for Scotland, Caledonian Tractors. He persuaded them to let their apprentices restore the machine and here it is on Caledonian Tractors stand at the Black Isle show in the late 1970’s.

After the grants were withdrawn from tree planting in the late 1980’s Andrew Allan’s work dried up and this 5 ton Holt Caterpillar left Scotland for a new home in England’.

If anyone knows more about this machine or worked on it sometime your comments would be very welcome.
