Photographs are courtesy of Inverness, Ross and Skye Forest District and staff at their Fort Augustus office.

Around the year 2000 a group of staff from Fort Augustus Forest District journeyed to Strathyre Forest Cabins location to look at the possibility of reusing some of the old cabins before they were knocked down and replaced by new versions. In Fort Augustus Forest District there was a need to replace the old office unit at Achmore (near South Strome) and also some additional buildings for the Otter Hide at Kylerhea Otter Haven.

The team lined up for this assessment were from back left:
John Hewlett (Building Surveyor)
Grant MacIntosh (Harvesting Head Forester)
Malcolm Wield (Forest District Manager)
Bruce Taylor (Forester based at Achmore)
Gordon Donaldson (District Forester)
Chris R Nixon (Forester based at Achmore)
Alastair Mackenzie (Forest Craftsman and Joiner – Loch Carron)

The PDF shows the team inspecting the inside and external areas of the cabin and there is also an image of a commemorative plaque to mark the opening of the Cabins in May 1973 by Lord Taylor of Gryfe then Chairman of the Forestry Commission.

In the event it turned out that the cabins were considered unsuitable for the District’s requirements and not used.

More photographs of the old cabins are very welcome.
