Retirement of Eric Jackson - Farigaig Forest

Date Added: 24 September 2015 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1995 Picture No: 3051

Photograph is courtesy of Inverness, Ross and Skye Forest District and staff at their Fort Augustus office.

This event is a presentation by Malcolm Wield to Eric Jackson of a long service certificate for many years work in Farigaig Forest.

Malcolm Wield who was head of Fort Augustus Forest District at the time says ‘When this photo was taken there was still a small squad let by Eric who used a workshop and garage next to the Visitor Centre as their daily base. They (mostly Eric and Davie Thom) were instrumental in adopting and feeding The Farigaig Cat, a feral tabby cat that came to live in the workshop for many years and is now part of local mythology.

The building in the background is the old ‘Woodlands’ building next to the main office at Fort Augustus. It was demolished a good few years ago. There was no office at Farigaig when I was involved there. The main building at Farigaig was converted into an unmanned visitor centre by Tony Hinde and still functions with Forest Walks, although the original display Tony built is long gone.

I think Gordon Donaldson may have taken the photograph’
