Aultmore Forest - Maps 2 & 3 - Hill of Maud Wood

One of a series of four maps covering the once separate unit of Aultmore Forest which lies in the old county of Banff between the coastal town of Cullen and Keith. Unfortunately the original planting maps from the Forest have not been located.
This map is a result of a complete resurvey of the forest probably in 1968 with maps produced in 1969 by Forestry Commission Head Quarters drawing office. In this case the Compartment numbers begin at No 1 on the Hill of Maud and progress through to No 69 on a small western woodland area. The planting on the Hill of Maud appears to have commenced in 1960 with some later planting in 1963/64. Further west there are a number of smaller scattered woodland areas that have been acquired by the Forestry Commission some of which are named on the map and the map cover:
Whiteash Wood
Muirton Plantation
Letterfourie
Pathhead Wood
Farnachty Wood
Linnhouse Wood
Scabbed Hill Wood
Moor of Clochan
It is interesting to note that a significant area in these smaller woods has been annotated as having a crop marked as Scrub which was the common mapping term then for mixed broadleaves (often birch) with areas of open space and shrubs such as willow. It is likely these were acquired as long since felled woodlands which had not been replanted and a programme of replanting with conifers appears to have started in 1968.
