It was in this wood of mixed mature silver birch trees and scrub kept originally for birch broom making the head forester found many of the larger silver birch trees with small holes bored in them with plastic pipes running down into containers, apparently this was for the gamekeepers home brew making "birch wine." When the foresters were limbing sycamore trees in early spring the under forester would hang empty syrup cans straight after cutting the branch off the can was usually half full of sap within an hour, the under forester was half cut within minutes.
