Instructions on Completing the R1 Planting Record
The record is courtesy of Forestry Commission Moray and Aberdeenshire Forest District.
It should be remembered that one of early primary objectives of the Forestry Commission was the successful establishment of a large national forest reserve of several million acres. As such it was imperative that the progress should be recorded and reported on in detail with substantial data analysing crop species, seed origins, ages of plantations and locations. The R1 Planting Record form was designed for this process and actually survived in use into the 21st century nearly 100 years later!
The letter shown in the PDF was usually sent out every year by Conservancy offices in an attempt to ensure all the forms were filled in to a standard format. Probably somewhat difficult to achieve considering that the form was used nationwide in over 300 - 400 separate forests.
The PDF also shows a R1 completed in 1932 for the Bin Forest near Huntly with the tree species list in the required order of Pines, Larches, Spruces, then Others (the latter not shown here). Note also that the minute asks that all the relevant WP (Working Plan) form be filled in and submitted up the line. They can be seen in other Picture Numbers under Forest Records or Working Plans.
