Leslie Phillip working on Panmure Estate

Photograph courtesy of Leslie Phillip, Perth, who worked on Panmure Estate near Carnoustie for about 8 years. At that time the Estate had a team of about seven men working in the extensive woods and a further three in the saw mill all managed by Alex Cumming Head Forester who previously worked for Atholl Estates at Dunkeld.

Leslie recalls that this was a clearfell of some large mixed conifers and broadleaves and appears to be working on a large Silver or Douglas fir butt. Leslie operated the Highland Bear Forwarder carrying the cross cut logs to the sawmill where on this occasion they were converted into timber to make tattie boxes.

My dad Sandy McHardy worked at sawmill from about 1962/3 until around 197O. We lived at Garage Flats and then Starforth Cottages. dad also drove the lorry for the beaters on a Saturday. tremendous place to play as children and Christmas parties were the best. I love the picture Leslie Phillip took in 1973 of the Ex Army AEC Matador converted to a crane clearing forestry. It brings back memories of using a similar vehicle in a similar way in the late 1960s/early 1970s.
My autobiography is to be published this year and I would like permission to use this photo to illustrate one story, with a suitable accreditation. Neither my publisher nor I are expecting it to be a best seller as I am having to contribute 50% of the publishing costs, so I am cheekily hoping for a freebie on the copyright. In January I sought and obtained Leslie Philip's permission, via his wife, Maureen, to use his photo of a Matador converted crane, doing forestry work, in my autobiography. When it is published later this year I should like to thank Leslie again, along with about 20 other contributors of photographs, and tell them where it will be available from, should they like a copy as a souvenir. For further information. My Uncle was Bill Anderson, brother was Robert Keddie. My dad was Bob Nicholson.
