John Deere conversion at Tollmuir sawmill

Date Added: 30 March 2015 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1968 Picture No: 2915

Photograph courtesy of Leslie Phillip, Perth showing a John Deere tractor with the addition of a large Atlas hydraulic grab! The tractor owned by the sawmill company, driven by David Wood, pulled a long pole wagon which delivered logs from a nearby felling site up in one of the Angus Glens down the public road to the mill. The tractor is model 40-20 and registration CES971C.

Other photographs in the PDF show the outfit in more detail, the long steel pole wagon and another with a very large mixed load! The tracked tractor in the foreground of one of the shots is a D4 with Hyster winch.

The majority of the work force at this sawmill in the early 1960s were young single men living on site hence the old time wooden caravans and outdoor toilet shown in the second pdf picture, rowdy weekend brawls in the sawmill yard were commonplace.
