Photograph courtesy of Leslie Phillip, Perth that shows several views of a locally made sulky and elderly D2 Caterpillar tractor owned by the McGregor Brothers of Kirriemuir who had the contract to clear some timber on the Estate. Can anyone confirm the original use of the WW2 tracks?

The chassis that the logging arch was mounted on is an American Athey tracked trailer. The US Airforce brought them over as dumpers to be used on airfield construction. Fully loaded, they took a Caterpillar D7 to handle them.
You will notice that the track plates have no grousers and the outer edges of the plates were turned down, this was to prevent shedding the tracks when turning. The advantage over the Hyster logging arches that the Canadian Forestry Corps used in Scotland was the lower centre of gravity and the elimination of punctures suffered by rubber tyres.
