If I remember rightly we were screefing above the furrows as well as planting the ridges and putting in 800 a day to make the piecework. Most of us used border spades, with rounded blades created with the bastard files used for sharpening the rutter. When planting in the peat flats the spade had to have a keen edge, so as to cut the fibrous turf.’
