Map of Conaglen areas — Leanachan Forest
Maps are courtesy of Lochaber Forest District, Torlundy with particular thanks to Ben Lennon.
Although the whole map is Leanachan Map No 3 and named Conaglen (probably acquired from the Estate of that name) the various areas all had separate names. Going from west to east from memory these were Loch Shiel, Callop (Sometimes Callert) with lochan in middle, rest of this particular area also had name not remembered, then Garvan and North Garvan.
The map cover has a hand written description of what appears to be possible fertiliser dump sites to be used for helicopter distribution onto the young growing crops. The 1 and 1a sites are in the fields at Garvan and 2a an area up a track above the locked gate at Callop. It was always a challenge to get sites for aerial fertiliser dumps in the pre forest roading stage that were accessibly by lorry, near enough the spreading site and clear of wires, trees and other obstacles that compromised the helicopter.
Any history or information on this forest, its workers and foresters would be very welcome.
