Map of Duisky & Achaphubuil - Leanachan Forest

Date Added: 15 February 2015 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1967 Picture No: 2881

Maps are courtesy of Lochaber Forest District, Torlundy with particular thanks to Ben Lennon.

First resurvey of the original planting maps of Leanachan Forest No 2 Map produced about 1967. The full details of species and planting years are only tabulated at the side but someone has added the details onto the actual compartments. Duisky was planted in 1963 but the Achaphubuil area was subject to Common Grazings and not released for planting if the author remembers correctly.

This map is labelled Leanachan Forest Map No 2 and believe No 1 would have been the main Forest area of Leanachan which unfortunately is not to hand nor are any of the original hand drawn planting maps.

Any history of the forest and of its workers and foresters would be very welcome.

1967 - my father was chief forester based at Torlundy then. You will remember him Norman ? Comment left on 23 February 2015 at 16:49 by
Yes Don. Indeed I do remember Alec MacLeman well as I arrived there about September that year and was there until 1973. By that time your father had just retired and was followed by Alastair Crawford. The other foresters that I can remember were Len MacRae on harvesting, Geoff Newsom on planting, Charlie Taylor in Glen Nevis and Frank Pemberton who arrived from the South for a brief stay after Charlie's untimely death.
