Resurveyed Map of Glenloy Forest circa 1965
Maps are courtesy of Lochaber Forest District, Torlundy with particular thanks to Ben Lennon.
First resurvey of the original planting maps of Glenloy Forest produced about 1965 as the 1967 and 1968 plantings have been added in by local staff. Unfortunately the full details of species and planting years are only tabulated at the side but someone has added some Planting Years in green on the actual compartments. Compartment numbers are quite hard to spot but are printed on in black.
The first plantings appear to be about 1931 and start in the south east corner next to the public road. There appears to be a break in the planting years as they move up to 1939 which suggests a fire burnt part of the early plantings. Two Forest Worker Holdings are annotated with some additional areas further up in the wood in between Compartments 66 and 67 (Difficult to make out actual number). The blank areas between the road and the forest and below the road although owned by the Forestry Commission are annotated with CG and most likely Common Grazings.
On the western edge of the forest someone has noted the condition of the fence, iron standards and wire net in pencil.
Please open large version to see the map details. Does anyone have any historical information about this forest, forest workers and foresters such as Willie Cameron and Wilfred Lawson and the MacPherson family?
