Cubin Forest — Corsican pine sample plot

Cubin Forest — Corsican pine sample plot

Date Added: 25 November 2014 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1954 Picture No: 2744

Photograph courtesy of Moray and Aberdeenshire Forest District with particular help from Lesley Hutcheson who collected a series of general photographs found in the Newton Office and filed them.

The photograph is numbered Forestry Commission B2564 and shows what appears to be a Corsican pine stand of trees which have been selected as a sample plot used for calculating this species growth and thinning data over its lifetime. From thousands of plots such as these in all the major species (replicated in all types of growth rates) tables were constructed which predicted and calculated timber volume production on any site from some fairly simple calculations.

This plot has obviously just been thinned and no doubt accurate measurements taken of standing and felled trees.
