Culbin Forest thatched sand dunes 1951

Date Added: 25 November 2014 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1951 Picture No: 2740

Photograph courtesy of Moray and Aberdeenshire Forest District with particular help from Lesley Hutcheson who collected a series of general photographs found in the Newton Office and filed them.

A Research photograph number B437 has been written on the back of this very dramatic image of thatched sand dunes clothed in long pieces of pine and possibly birch tree tops laid parallel and close to each other. This would ensure a tight mesh of branches and light stems that would be resistant to the wind and also relatively easy to walk over and plant trees within.

The compartment is given as 105B and the old maps confirms that this was planted in 1951 and 52.
