Research plot in Culbin Forest Planted in 1922
Photograph courtesy of Moray and Aberdeenshire Forest District with particular help from Lesley Hutcheson who collected a series of general photographs found in the Newton Office and filed them.
Photograph has Research photograph number B1839 and details as follows
‘Inside Pinus contorta plot (Now Sample plots S136, 137) Culbin Expt 2 - P22’.
Looking at the old planting map in Picture No 2552 the Compartment number can be judged to be No 53 where a small series of species trials were laid down at the very start of the Forestry Commission planting.
The Lodgepole pine does not look that fantastic and the bent stems are somewhat reminiscent of coastal varieties. It would be interesting to see the originating location of the seed. Judging from the tops lying on the ground the plot must have just been thinned.
Can anyone name the man?
