Culbin Forest Compartment 81
The image is courtesy of the family of late George Dey who have gifted the actual slides to Aberdeen University.
This image of the sand dunes has been replicated in an old album which recently came to light in Newton Forest Office and is courtesy of Moray and Aberdeenshire Forest District with particular help from Lesley Hutcheson.
Following the unearthing of the album and other historical documents most of the glass lantern slides can now be attributed to R Cowell-Smith who was a District Officer covering the Culbin area 1932-1934 and who is likely to have compiled the album on sand dune afforestation. PDF contains page from album with text and same image.
This particular slide also describes the location as Compartment 81 in Culbin Forest and shows the front face of a large moving sand dune as it progresses eastwards with the prevailing westerly winds. Picture Number 2552 contains the planting map showing the original Compartment numbers.
