Alastair relates on his name versions
‘As an explanation regarding the confusion with my Christian name, you are probably aware of my background in that my family were from the north of Skye and were Gaelic speakers and of course Alasdair is the Gaelic for Alexander and that was what was used at all times.
There is no doubt that my parents gave me a split personality when it came to names. When I did my National Service and got involved with the RAF I had to use my formal Christian title and was known as Alex, this also remained the case while at Faskally. My first posting was to Mull and on my arrival at Salen pier I was met by the senior forester Alec Nicol and after our introductions Alec foresaw problems with the same names. I was able to put his mind at ease when I suggested that I would use Alastair. The rest is history.’
