Timber Corps group circa 1944

There is no information on the ladies in this group or the location but it is assumed that this site is near to Shandford Lodge where Robert Allison was Chief Instructor of the team that trained all the women members of the Timber Corps who passed through this training camp. In addition to training the teams of ladies, Bob also managed a permanent team of Timber Corps ladies, forestry men and Prisoners of War who harvested timber from nearby woods and delivered pit props and other material every day to the rail stations.
The ladies look as though they are cross cutting pit props from tree length timber hauled to a central site. The large bow saws held by two ladies would be used for this purpose. The rest of the team have peeling spades to strip all the bark off the props after which they would stacked for pick up by truck and taken to a railway station.
