Newton Nursery (nr Elgin) seed beds
Images are courtesy of Colin Lawson son of Wilfred Lawson, a forester who trained at Benmore Forester Training School and was posted to South Strome Forest from 1951.
A series of three photographs which shows ongoing operations on the seed beds in Newton Nursery in 1955. Wilfred must have been on a visit or had a short training course there at this time because he records on the back of the photograph ‘Newton Nursery, 86 acres lines and seedbeds, 1955 sowed 1300lbs seed, lining out over 10 million seedlings'
This photograph shows the little grey Fergie tractor pulling what could be an undercutting bar through a seed bed.
The person in the first photograph in the PDF is unknown but shows another view of the seed beds and seedlings overlooked by the monument on the hill. The second image is of some workers tilthing up the surface of a seed bed prior to sowing the tree seed.
Can anyone name the nursery staff?
