Felling Trees in Gartly Moor Forest

Trees were cut off at the stump and hauled down by hand if they hung up in the branches of other trees (which they often did in a thinning operation). Branches were all slashed off with the chainsaw and the tree stem cut into individual log lengths or left in whole tree lengths depending on market demands and extraction machine types. In this picture Roy does not have a loggers tape so it appears that the treees are being left in the length. It is possible that he is clear felling an area for the construction of forest roads for timber lorries to operate on.
