Register of Plantations Durris Estate 1850-1929

Date Added: 12 June 2014 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1935 Picture No: 2543

Register, kept by Forestry Commission Moray and Aberdeenshire Forest District, scanned by Norman Davidson.

Mundernal – Woodland and finally General Remarks.(3rd and last in sequence)
Further details of last of the woods which also includes details on the nursery and nursery operations as well as much detail on the trees and individual specimens within the policy grounds surrounding the house. The tree species botanical names often referred to have changed significantly since those times but most can be identified.

The whole record does give an insight into forestry, timber prices, establishment problems, diseases and pests of days gone by which will still resonate with foresters of today. Perhaps the granting of funds to purchase a gun to shoot the red squirrels eating the Douglas fir cones before the Estate could gather them for seed would be queried today!!
