Loading logs in Aberdeen Harbour c1954

Date Added: 09 June 2014 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1954 Picture No: 2516

Photograph courtesy of Forestry Commission, Moray and Aberdeenshire Forest District.

No information on exact year or who took the photograph but shows a very atmospheric Aberdeen harbour where two steam cranes on rails are loading logs from the gale devastated forests of north east Scotland into the holds of the freighter Anno. Two lorries, British Road Services and Aberdeen General Group have been hired to take the logs to the harbour and have cross bearers to allow slings to be passed through to enable appropriate sized loads to be lifted by the cranes.

Note the hand barrow with spare slings, the rail wagons and the heavy grab bucket lying beside it. On the far side of the harbour the piles of what is assumed imported sawn timber stacked on the quay side.

I wonder if that is Pit-props are being delivered to a Coal Mine near the Coast?

The Diameters look about right.

Perhaps the Ship has delivered Coal and is taking a return load to the same Pit.
