D/60/T90/t ploughing in loamy gley near Aberfeldy and quite a reasonable output. Perhaps the planting turf is a little large for easy planting and the plough having gone deeper here has missed creating the ideal planting positions across the furrow. However the thinking in those days was ‘deep is good and the more soil or peat turned out the better the tree growth from mineral decomposition and vegetation suppression’. A very fine line however!

Can anyone identify the location?

Location is, I think, the Forestry Commission aquisition at Castle Dow above Balnaguard in Strathtay. The block is adjacent to the large Griffin property established by Tilhill for the Midland Bank in the late 70's and through the 1980s.

I was an OND sandwich year student at Dunkeld in 1979/80 and involved in the pre-plough heatherburning led by Tavish McMillan. I recall finishing a long day burning when on returning to the depot we were immediately despached up the hill track to Loch Skiach where the Tilhill muirburn had got out of control. We were there well into the night.
