New humpy draining plough at Wm Clark’s Engineering Works, Parkgate. This plough has a large landside board for working in soft peat to prevent sideways crabbing and reduce the fall back from the bits of furrows it would be crossing during draining. The beam is now of a substantial cross section and fitted with double single acting rams to allow a smooth easy lift with the tractor hydraulics. The plough is now at its final stages of development other than a tilting mechanism was added to the plough head to allow it to dig into the ground quickly. More critically in very soft conditions the head was tilted the other way so that it ploughed its way to the surface without placing too much pressure on the wheels causing them to sink below the surface. The wheels were normally doubled up latterly with extra wide tyre versions. Photos by GGM Taylor 1969.
