Some images by N Short of the excavator mounted on a Caterpillar R2 tractor creating a drain through a standing crop of Norway spruce in Newcastleton Forest in September 1959. It is not mentioned if a route was cleared through the trees or if this was an unplanted strip but some sumps are visible as also the very obvious damage to the rooting systems of the side trees. Note also the high mounds of roots and soil put to one side with some difficulty among the closely packed trees.
