Once pulled open this allowed the granules to rundown the tube and be fanned out via the bottom lampshade shaped shield. The flow stopped when hand lever was released.
Major problem of measuring accurately quantity of herbicide application per spot was developed by Donald Fraser at Inverness in his workstudy/research role with his selection of groved cylinders for various herbicides which replaced this simple slide mechanism.
