Views in Minard Forests - Fowler tractor & plough

Mr Ender Rudolf from Germany or Austria toured around some Forestry Commission sites in Scotland in 1954 and on his return appears to have compiled a photographic album of his visit. He must have copied some of the pages of photographs and returned at least 15 pages to Scotland.
Two pages are shown with 6 photographs covering cultivation in Minard Forest. This image shows the Fowler tractor (HYU68? and FC No 298) and Cuthbertson single furrow plough working on the spaced single furrow ploughing on a site where it would appear the aim was to use men to cut the ploughed turf and fill the area between the furrows with planting turfs at normal plant spacing.
Note that this plough has a second vertical rod next to the box on the arch holding the distance measuring system. Can anyone say how the counter worked and what was the purpose of the second rod? Note the heavy track plates hinged to each other thus not requiring a track chain and also banksman patrolling with the tractor as a safety backup.
