Cuthbertson Buffalo and plough Jordanlaw Moss

A series of images of a Cuthbertson Buffalo tractor with draining plough directly mounted onto the rear. In this case there is no hydraulic lifting rams and the lift is provided by the front tractor winch. The winch rope was led over one of the plough mounting frame stabiliser arms which runs above the driver’s head. There is some confusion over the dates when this work took place in Jordanlaw Moss, Egerhope Forest as some images are dated 1952 and others 1954 and one image has the name Spotteswood.
The large draining plough with two side discs appears to have done a remarkably good job on the double furrow ploughed peat moss. This photograph shows the plough head down and gives a view of the unusual pulley frame construction which leads the winch rope from the drum and turns it overhead to the top of the plough frame. The pulley frame would also allow the winch rope to be fed down to the front draw bar of the tractor and thereafter out forward or perhaps even backwards underneath the tractor for lifting a trailed plough beam. A nice bit of engineering!
The view into the Buffalo cockpit shows the very weather exposed driver situation, his rather basic looking seat, hydraulic controls for winch possibly on left side and the steering leavers in front.
