Cuthbertson Hill plough demonstration
Forestry Commission copyright images of Forest Research photographs courtesy of Glenn Brearley, Roslin. Nil Ref No.
No details of this series of 6 images of what appears to be an early demonstration of Cuthbertson’s hill drain plough to a wide collection of people, young and old, possibly representing estates, farms and forestry. No date is given but the driver of the tractor is the same individual as appears in Photo No 2086 on James Cuthbertson’s own machine on hire. Detailed view of plough - note low wheels, small frame, beam set well down into plough head and hand winch to lift plough head out of ground. This was less of an ordeal in long hill drains which could in some instances go enormous distances before the plough was lifted. Date estimated at around 1945?
